When does the EU AI Act take effect?

The AI Act entered into force on August 1, 2024. Implementation is phased: prohibited practices were banned from February 2, 2025; GPAI obligations started August 2, 2025; high-risk AI system requirements become fully applicable on August 2, 2026; and regulated product integration requirements apply from August 2, 2027.

Does the AI Act apply to my company outside the EU?

Yes, potentially. The AI Act applies to providers placing AI systems on the EU market and deployers using AI systems within the EU, regardless of where the company is established. Similar to GDPR, if your AI system outputs are used within the EU, you may be subject to the AI Act.
